  • What is sleep apnea?

    • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder that involves a decrease or complete halt in airflow despite an ongoing effort to breathe.

  • Why does sleep apnea occur?

    • OSA occurs when the muscles relax during sleep, causing soft tissue in the back of the throat to collapse and block the upper airway.

  • What treatment modalities exist for obstructive sleep apnea?

    • PAP therapy, surgery, oral appliances.

  • How does PAP therapy treat sleep apnea?

    • First introduced in 1981, CPAP provides a steady stream of pressurized air to patients through a mask that they wear during sleep. This airflow keeps the airway open, preventing pauses in breathing and restoring normal oxygen levels.

  • Are there risks to not treating obstructive sleep apnea?

    • Studies show that sleep apnea is independently associated with an increased risk of stroke, cancer, and death.

    • The risks of not treating sleep apnea are high. Per a recent study, people with moderate / severe sleep apnea were:

      • Four times more likely to die (hazard ratio = 4.2)

      • Nearly four times more likely to have a stroke (HR = 3.7)

      • Three times more likely to die from cancer (HR = 3.4),

      • Two and a half times more likely to develop cancer.

    • More studies summarized.

  • Who interprets my home sleep study results?
